Dropbox is a great utility for storing your files in sync or for having a backup. And now, Google Drive is out, and you may be planning a switch to Google Drive. But some of you may not be ready yet, to leave your storage space in Dropbox for trying and testing Google Drive. However, if you’re really planning to make that switch, then you could use your Dropbox account for something else – something more creative. Yes, you can use Dropbox as an online stack for storing your images as a gallery. Wondering how? Let’s dig in further.

How to create Dropbox image gallery?

Dropbox is having a Photos folder from where you can easily create image galleries and share with the friends you choose via the Public folder. For Photos Galleries, the Public and Photos folder works fine. At times, you may need to share files, static sites, scraps of codes and more. Dropbox is good, but it lacks certain features like the ability for users to comment on the items or files stored in the folder which is made publicly available. You can just drop in your files and images into the Photos folder and Dropbox automatically makes it into a cool image gallery which can be accessed by anyone, provided that they have the link of your shared folder. But what if you need to enable comments on files stored in a particular folder?

Go to Views.fm which is a new application created using the Dropbox API. It allows you to create and share image galleries. The main advantage of using Views.fm is that, it enables people to comment ton individual files. And it allows you to download the files apart from being able to comment on files. First of all, sign up on the site. Now give access to Views.fm for accessing your Dropbox account. Create a folder where you want to create and host your image gallery in.

Give permission to access Dropbox

Initiate the Dropbox client on your PC, and upload all your files. Alternatively, you can use the Browser Uploader in the web interface to upload your files. Once your files are uploaded, you can copy the URL for the image gallery. You can use this URL to share your image gallery with the whole world.

Now your image gallery powered by Dropbox is live on the web and anybody can access it if they have your image gallery link. And they can even download those images without having to sign up for Dropbox or Views.fm.

Another great thing I found about Views.fm is that, it arranges all your files in a specific pattern with a unique thumbnail, making it easy for people to find a specific file from a whole lot of files in your shared folder.

What if you want to share a folder privately only to selected people? Yeah, Views.fm also allows you to do that. If this feature is enabled, then the people you choose can only comment on your files.

This is a great way for small companies, organizations, web developers or graphic designers who need a little bit of storage space to make their works or files publicly or privately available to people.
