Have you ever tried sending a GB file over internet? Sometimes it’s frustrating when the internet gets disturbed in the middle of the process. You cannot send a big file through email. You try to use cloud storage services like Box.net or Dropbox but again a small disconnection will make you start uploading the file from the start. Here, I will be telling you, how you can break a big file into small pieces and send it through email and then the receiver can join them back to create the big file. I came across apps like WinRAR and HJSplit that can help you with breaking files into smaller files to send it over email. There are some online services as well that can help you send big files at once to limited amount of people.

1. Breaking files using HJSplit:

HJSplit is a freeware that can be downloaded here. You can then extract the zip file to a folder. Now, open the hjsplit.exe . Click the split button and select the big file you want to break. It will break your big file into small files named as extensions .001, .002, .003. You can send files over email. When someone gets the files, he/she just need to download and store  the files in a single folder and then he can download HJSplit, open it and select join option. Select the first file named .001 and then key in the final file name. The files will be joined back, a major advantage with HJSplit is that it works on all platforms like Windows or Linux.

2. Breaking file using WinRAR:

WinRAR is a well known tool and it has the capability to break a big file into small zipped files that can be rejoined anytime. Just right click the file and select “Add to archive” in the context menu. You can then select the size of the split files in the “Split to Volumes” section as shown below:

Select OK and it will go ahead. To rejoin all files must be kept in a single folder and right click the file named  filename 1.zip and select “Extract Here” in the context menu.

3. Use Online utilities to Email Large files quickly:

You do not want to do it all yourself. If you want to rely on your internet to upload a big file then simple go to WeTransfer, you will be able to send a 2GB file to 20 people. Other services are YouSendIt and DropSend. You just need to upload files on these sharing websites and then the receiver gets an email with the link.
